Etymology: L, con + fabulari, to speak
the fabrication of experiences or situations, often recounted in a detailed and plausible way to fill in and cover up cognitive impairment or memory loss, which may be caused by alcoholism, especially in people with Korsakoff's psychosis; head injuries; dementia; or lead poisoning. Also called fabrication.

confabulation [kon″fab-u-la´shun]
unconscious filling in of gaps in memory with fabricated facts and experiences, commonly associated with organic pathology. It differs from lying in that the patient has no intention to deceive and believes the fabricated memories to be real.

confabulation (kn·faˈ·by·lāˑ·shn),
n fabrication of information that often occurs during hypnosis, when the unconscious encounters a memory gap and fills it with incorrect information.

The reason he needs defending is the stark diagnostic probability offered by Rowell: Artaud (1896-1948) "suffered from confabulatory paraphrenia, a delusional psychosis which is not accompanied by intellectual deterioration and in which some symptoms - hallucinations and confabulations - are close to those of schizophrenia.
If the patient is paranoid or confabulatory, then question the rationality of his or her reasons.
