concanavalin [kon″kah-nav´ah-lin]
a lectin isolated from the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) that agglutinates mammalian erythrocytes and is a mitogen that stimulates predominantly T lymphocytes. Abbreviated ConA.
concanavalin either of two phytohemagglutinins isolated along with canavalin from the meal of the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis and other species of Canavalia), which agglutinate the blood of mammals as a result of reaction with polyglucosans. concanavalin A binds to sugar residues on cell surfaces and stimulates T lymphocytes to proliferate; has also been shown to inhibit the growth of ascites tumors.
