A technique for measuring the concentration of a known constituent of a solution by comparison of colors of standard solutions of that constituent.

measurement of the intensity of color in a fluid or substance as compared with that in a standard solution. See also spectrophotometry.

At the time of this work, the commercial laboratory used to analyse our soil samples was using ICP-AES in preference to colourimetry to analyse soils for Colwell P.
However, in most previous studies, the concentration of condensed P species in solution was determined using colourimetry, with the polyphosphate concentration calculated as the difference between total P and initial OR Due to the digestion procedure required to determine total P, some weakly adsorbed and organic P species would be included in the solution P measurement, resulting in an underestimation of P sorption.
