A 30-minute exposure to a 1 parts per billion (ppb) concentration of atrazine reduced the activity of olfactory neurons in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) by 11 percent, the researchers reported last November at the annual meeting of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in Montreal. In Chile, infestation with Diphyllobothrium plerocercoids has also been detected in coho salmon living in the wild, a nonindigenous species raised originally in aquaculture that escaped from pens (19). In late 1964 and early 1965, fishery managers in Michigan stocked the lake with 1 million surplus coho salmon eggs from Oregon and by the time those fish reached spawning age in 1966 and 1967, the experiment proved such a success that "coho fever" spread like wildfire around Lake Michigan. |
