clavulanate /clav·u·la·nate/ (klav´u-lah-nāt) a β-lactamase inhibitor used as the potassium salt in combination with penicillins in treating infections caused by β-lactamase–producing organisms.
clavulanic acid, clavulanate
a beta-lactam product of Streptomyces spp. It binds irreversibly and inhibits β-lactamase produced by many organisms. Used commonly in combination with amoxicillin.
