civet a large cat-like animal but with short legs and a long muzzle and without retractile claws. The family Viverridae includes civets and genets; the civets are characterized by the secretion of a valuable scent from their anal glands, and are kept in captivity so that the scent can be harvested. They are nocturnal, carnivorous and largely arboreal. Common genera are Civettictis, Viverra and Genetta, but there are many other genera of civets. Also the spotted skunk, a completely unrelated animal, is known as a civet in the USA. How to thank TFD for its existence? | However, recent data suggest that civets may be only amplifiers of a natural cycle involving trade and consumption of bats (28). But very little has changed, judging from a recent trip to the squalid animal market in Guangzhou, where the government ordered 10,000 civets exterminated after the World Health Organization determined the catlike animals carry a virus linked to SARS. Exposure rates among animal merchants ranged from 19 percent in those selling cats to 73 percent in traders of masked palm civets. |
