citrate /cit·rate/ (sit´rāt) a salt of citric acid.
citrate phosphate dextrose (CPD) anticoagulant citrate phosphate dextrose solution. citrate phosphate dextrose adenine (CPDA-1) anticoagulant citrate phosphate dextrose adenine solution.
citrate [sit′rāt, sī′trāt] Etymology: L, kitron, citron 1 an anion of citric acid. 2 the act of treating with a citrate or citric acid. citration, n. citrate [sit´rāt, si´trāt] any anionic form, salt, or ester of citric acid. citrate phosphate dextrose (CPD) a solution containing citric acid, sodium citrate, monobasic sodium phosphate, and dextrose that is the primary anticoagulant used for preservation of whole blood or red blood cells for up to 21 days. The official USP name is anticoagulant citrate phosphate dextrose solution. citrate phosphate dextrose adenine (CPDA-1) an anticoagulant solution, containing citric acid, sodium citrate, monobasic sodium phosphate, dextrose, and adenine, used for the preservation of whole blood and red blood cells for up to 35 days; it extends red cell survival by providing adenine needed for the maintenance of red cell ATP levels. The official USP name is anticoagulant citrate phosphate dextrose adenine solution.
citrate any salt of citric acid. Citrate is the first intermediate of the citric acid cycle and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. It also plays an important role in fatty acid synthesis which takes place in the cytoplasm. It acts as a carrier of acetyl-CoA, the construction material for fatty acids. The movement is assisted by two enzymes, citrate-condensing enzyme, which catalyzes the condensation of the acetyl unit with oxaloacetate in the mitochondria, and citrate-cleavage enzyme (citrate lyase), which catalyzes the release of the acetyl radical in the cytoplasm of the cell. citrate cleavage enzyme important enzyme in fatty acid synthesis from glucose; catalyzes the split of citrate to acetyl CoA and oxaloacetate. citrate synthase first enzyme of the TCA cycle catalyzing the formation of citrate from acetyl CoA and oxaloacetate.
