[FIGURE 2 OMITTED] Clinically, median rhomboid glossitis manifests as a well-delineated erytbematous area located along the midline posterior dorsal tongue just anterior to the circumvallate papillae (figure 1).
The oropharyngeal mucosa, posterior to the circumvallate papillae, is endodermal in origin and is typically more affected by aggressive carcinomas, whereas the oral mucosa is ectodermal in derivation and is affected by less aggressive lesions.
These are usually the circumvallate papillae which are round raised "taste buds" towards the back.
