Etymology: Gk, chronos, time, endon, within, kardia, heart, itis, inflammation
persistent inflammation of the endocardium that usually follows an attack of acute endocarditis, syphilis, or an atheroma. It frequently involves the cardiac valves, making them incompetent. Also called valvular endocarditis.
