intersex

Etymology: L, inter + sexus, sex, gender
any individual who has anatomic characteristics of both sexes or whose external genitalia are ambiguous or inappropriate for either the normal male or female. See also intersexuality, pseudohermaphroditism.

2. an animal which exhibits intersexuality.

chromosomal intersex
includes all patients whose sexual abnormalities are due to sex chromosome abnormalities.
intersex condition
where there is ambiguity in the structure of the gonads, reproductive tract or external genitalia.
gonadal intersex
patients who have a normal male or female karyotype but whose gonads do not correspond to their chromosomal sex.
phenotypic intersex
patients with normal gonadal and chromosomal sex but their sex organs in whole or in part are abnormal; their other sexual characteristics may also be abnormal.
