The recommended schedule for childhood immunization is for IPV to be given at two, four, and six to eight months of age and between four to six years of age. The Coalition was formed in 2007 by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) to make childhood immunization a national health priority and to educate parents about childhood influenza and the benefits of annual immunization. In Louisiana, Roxane Townsend, MD, secretary of the state's Department of Health and Hospitals, noted that uninsurance rates in both Louisiana and Mississippi increased in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and that the subsequent loss of doctors and displacement of families most likely contributed to a drop in childhood immunization rates in her state. |
