charley horse

charley horse /char·ley horse/ (chahr´le hors) soreness and stiffness in a muscle, especially the quadriceps, due to overstrain or contusion.
char·ley horse (chärl hôrs)
n.
Localized pain or stiffness in a muscle following excessive muscular exertion or the contusion of a muscle.

charley horse
[chär′lē hôrs′]
a sudden painful condition of the quadriceps or hamstring muscles characterized by soreness and stiffness. It is the result of a strain, tear, or bruise of the muscle; is aggravated by movement; and is often associated with athletic activity. Treatment includes rest and massage. Compare cramp.

Charley Horse
A popular term for leg pain caused by a contusion to the thigh involving the quadriceps muscle; without immediate compression, the ensuing hematoma and pain can be substantial; the term is often applied to painful injuries to other muscle groups
