character /char·ac·ter/ (kar´ak-ter) 1. a quality indicative of the nature of an object or an organism. 2. in genetics, the expression of a gene or group of genes in a phenotype. 3. in psychiatry, a term used in much the same way as personality, particularly for those personality traits shaped by life experiences. acquired character a noninheritable modification produced in an animal as a result of its own activities or of environmental influences. primary sex characters those characters in the male or female that are directly involved in reproduction; the gonads and their accessory structures. secondary sex characters those characters specific to the male or female but not directly involved in reproduction.
