Having or relating to skin that is dry, scaly, and fissured, owing to excessive evaporation of moisture from the skin surface.

Etymology: ME, chappen, cracked
pertaining to skin that is roughened, cracked, or reddened by exposure to cold or excessive moisture evaporation. Stinging or burning sensations often accompany the disorder. Prevention is achieved through protection against exposure to cold and wind. Treatment includes the avoidance of frequent washing, the replacement of soaps and detergents with superfatted soaps, and the application of emollients. Compare frostbite. chap, v.
