sick cell syndrome

a condition characterized by idiopathic hyponatremia in patients with either acute or chronic illness.

sick cell syndrome

A condition characterised by redistribution of sodium between the intra- and extracellular compartments without changes in total body sodium, which occurs in up to 10% of critically ill patients and has been attributed to dysfunctional cell membrane integrity, variably accompanied by hyponatraemia.
 
Aetiology
Hypovolaemia, hypoxia, malnutrition, sepsis.
