A spokeswoman for the city council's highways department said: "Recent inspections and assessments have identified the need for protection works to the joints and supports of Lancaster flyover, including water-proofing, cathodic protection (corrosion prevention) and replacement of carriageway movement joints.
Although the oil and pipeline industry has developed reliable cathodic protection methods and monitoring systems that permit safe operation in difficult environments, these industries also experience coating failures.
The facility features tools such as cathodic protection test field with buried, electrified pipelines; a coatings lab with a flash and spray booth; a virtual spray booth for classroom-based applicator training; an equipment preparation area; and the nation's only marine ballast tank immersion tent, which simulates a ship's ballast tank for shipboard corrosion assessment training.
