Catabolism A process of metabolism that breaks down complex substances into simple ones. The process liberates energy for use in work, energy storage, or heat production. Carbon dioxide and water are produced, as well as energy. Compare anabolism. catabolic, adj. catabolism (k n process during metabolism where cells break down complex substances into simple compounds. catabolism (k n the destructive processes (opposite of the anabolic-metabolic processes) by which complex substances are converted into more simple compounds.
