n.
A dilation of the common carotid artery at its bifurcation into the internal and external carotids, containing baroreceptors that when stimulated cause slowing of the heart, vasodilation, and a fall in blood pressure.

As a chemoreceptor, it is distinct from the carotid sinus, which is a baroreceptor.
More importantly, in susceptible individuals, palpation over the region of the carotid sinus may cause carotid sinus syncope or worse.
The study recommended pacemaker therapy for persons with carotid sinus syndrome who suffer repeated fainting spells.
