Assigning an infantry weapon such as the mortar (and one that, even in considerably larger calibres, is still regarded in many armies as an infantry weapon) to the artillery is, like the Coyotes above, a measure of job protection. The RADS system will be developed and combined with other calibres ready for demonstration in the US in the second half of 2003. The need to fire laser-guided munitions will probably push us to employ 120 mm mortars and/or 155 mm howitzers, as these calibres are already supported by the necessary ammunition. |
