calibration /cal·i·bra·tion/ (kal″ĭ-bra´shun) determination of the accuracy of an instrument, usually by measurement of its variation from a standard, to ascertain necessary correction factors.

Etymology: Fr, calibre, the bore of a gun
the process of measuring or calibrating against an established standard, such as a deciliter or kilogram.

calibration (kal´brā´shn),
n 1. the process of comparing a measurement instrument against a verified standard instrument. The US Bureau of Standards maintains the national calibration instruments for weights and measures.
2. the comparison of procedures between clinicians to achieve a clinical standard.
