calcined magnesite

the mineral magnesite which has been reduced to a powder by heating, i.e. calcined. It is used as a dietary supplement for cattle and sheep to prevent hypomagnesemia. Used for topdressing pasture with a similar objective. Contains about 90% magnesium oxide.

Summary: The leaching kinetics of calcined magnesite in aqueous lactic acid solutions was investigated in a batch reactor by using parameters such as temperature, acid concentration, particle size, solid/liquid ratio, and stirring speed.
Both natural magnesite and calcined magnesite (Magnesium Oxide) also contain some impurities such as silisium, iron and calcium which affect the quality of products.
In general, the reactivity of calcined magnesite is much higher than the natural magnesite.

Two of these trials on pumice soils in Kaingaroa Forest have shown that calcined magnesite (calmag) applied as 2-5 mm chips at a rate of 150 kg Mg/ha is very effective in increasing soil exchangeable Mg concentration within 2 years of application (Mitchell et al.
