infantilism /in·fan·ti·lism/ (in´fan-til-izm) (in-fan´til-izm) persistence of childhood characters into adult life, marked by mental retardation, underdevelopment of sex organs, and often dwarfism.
cachectic infantilism  that due to chronic infection or poisoning.
hypophysial infantilism  a type of dwarfism with retention of infantile characteristics, due to undersecretion of growth hormone and gonadotropin deficiency.
sexual infantilism  continuance of prepubertal sex characters and behavior after the usual age of puberty.
universal infantilism  general dwarfishness in stature, with absence of secondary sex characteristics.

n.
1. A state of arrested development in an adult, characterized by retention of infantile mentality, accompanied by stunted growth and sexual immaturity, and often by dwarfism.
2. Extreme immaturity, as in behavior or character.

Etymology: L, infans, unable to speak
1 a condition in which various anatomic, physiologic, and psychologic characteristics of childhood persist in the adult. It is characterized by mental retardation, underdeveloped sexual organs, and usually small stature. Compare progeria.
2 a condition, usually of psychologic rather than organic origin, characterized by speech and voice patterns in an older child or adult that are typical of very young children.

infantilism [in-fan´tĭ-lizm, in´fan-tĭ-lizm]
persistence of the characteristics of childhood into adult life, marked by mental retardation, underdevelopment of the reproductive organs, and often dwarfism.
