butane /bu·tane/ (bu´tān) an aliphatic hydrocarbon from petroleum, occurring as a colorless flammable gas; used in pharmacy as an aerosol propellant.

Either of two isomers of a gaseous hydrocarbon produced synthetically from petroleum and used as a refrigerant, as a aerosol propellant, and in the manufacture of synthetic rubber.

BURBANK - A federal airport security worker was injured Wednesday when a collection of butane cigarette lighters taken from airline passengers caught fire in an office at the Bob Hope Airport.
