crepitus /crep·i·tus/ (krep´ĭ-tus) 1. the discharge of flatus from the bowels. 2. crepitation. 3. crepitant rale.
Crepitus A crackling or crunching sound heard when the ends of a fractured piece of bone rub against each other. Mentioned in: Gangrene, Nasal Trauma crepitus [krep′itəs] Etymology: L, crackling 1 flatulence or the noisy discharge of fetid gas from the intestine through the anus. 2 a sound or feel that resembles the crackling noise heard when rubbing hair between the fingers or throwing salt on an open fire. Crepitus is associated with gas gangrene, rubbing of bone fragments, air in superficial tissues, or crackles of a consolidated area of the lung in pneumonia. 3 a clicking sound often heard in movement of joints, for example, in temporomandibular joint resulting from joint irregularities. Also called crepitation. crepitus (krep´itus), n a crackling sound such as that produced by the rubbing together of fragments of a fractured bone or by air moving in a tissue space. crepitus, bony, n the crackling sound noted during auscultation; also the sensation noted during palpation when the fragments of a fractured bone are rubbed together. crepitus 1. the grating of fractured bone fragments against each other. 2. the crackling of joints. 3. the noise produced by pressure on tissues containing an abnormal amount of air or gas, as in cellular emphysema. 4. the discharge of flatus from the bowels. 5. crepitation. 6. a crepitant rale.
