An infant who remains at the hospital where born for up to one year, awaiting discharge to a parent or placement in alternative care.

boarder baby

1 an infant abandoned to a hospital because the mother is unable to care for him or her. Many infants born with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or to a mother with HIV infection or infants delivered to mothers who are drug users are boarder babies.
2 in some hospitals, any infant still in the nursery after the mother's discharge for any reason (even if only temporarily).

boarder baby

An infant kept in a hospital nursery until status permits discharge to family care or transfer to another agency for maintenance or adoption.
