black cohosh the plant Cimicifuga racemosa or its fresh or dried root, which has estrogenic effects and is used in menopause and premenstrual syndrome; also used in folk medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine. blue cohosh the herb Caulophyllum thalictroides or its fresh roots or dried rhizome and roots, which have weak estrogenic effects; used for menstrual disorders and as an antispasmodic and uterine stimulant during labor; also used in homeopathy.
