blood bank technology specialist,
an allied health professional who performs both routine and specialized immunohematologic tests in technical areas of the modern blood bank and who performs transfusion services using methodology that conforms to the Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services of the American Association of Blood Banks. The individual may be responsible for testing for blood group antigens, compatibility, and antibody identification; investigating abnormalities such as hemolytic diseases of the newborn, hemolytic anemias, and adverse responses to transfusions; supporting physicians and nurses in transfusion therapy, including that for homologous organ transplantation; collecting and processing blood, including selecting donors, drawing and typing blood, and performing pretransfusion tests to ensure patient safety.
