block calving a breeding management system in which all of the cows in a herd, or an area, are encouraged to calve at approximately the same time. Has the effect of concentrating all of the calving and puerperal problems at one time and having all of the cows begin and terminate their lactations together. Has the disadvantage that the herd's period of maximum productivity is also concentrated, making it subject to much greater risk of loss. Is the opposite of year-round calving. Called also seasonal calving. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |
