cohosh /co·hosh/ (ko-hosh´) [Algonquian] any of various North American medicinal plants.
black cohosh  the plant Cimicifuga racemosa or its fresh or dried root, which has estrogenic effects and is used in menopause and premenstrual syndrome; also used in folk medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine.
blue cohosh  the herb Caulophyllum thalictroides or its fresh roots or dried rhizome and roots, which have weak estrogenic effects; used for menstrual disorders and as an antispasmodic and uterine stimulant during labor; also used in homeopathy.
