Therapeutic use of a high-frequency electric current to bring about the coagulation and destruction of tissue.

Electrocoagulation
a technique using electrical energy to destroy the warts. Usually done for warts within the anus with a local anesthesia, electrocoagulation is most painful form of therapy, and can cause both bleeding and discharge from the anus.

electrocoagulation

Etymology: Gk, elektron + L, coagulare, to curdle
a therapeutic destructive form of electrosurgery in which tissue is hardened by the passage of high-frequency current from an electric cautery device. Also called surgical diathermy. Compare electrodesiccation.

electrocoagulation [e-lek″tro-ko-ag″u-la´shun]
a type of electrosurgery by which tissue is coagulated using a modulated alternating current.

electrocoagulation (ēlek´trōkō-ag´yōōla´shn),
n the use of electrically generated heat to destroy tissue by coagulation necrosis. Usually a platinum wire electrode or loop is used.

electrocoagulation
a method of electrosurgery used to coagulate tissue, which employs moderately damped or modulated undamped alternating current, and requires both an active concentrating electrode and an inactive dispersing electrode. See also electrosurgery.

bipolar electrocoagulation
the electrical current passes between two tips of a handpiece.
monopolar electrocoagulation
the electrical current passes from the handpiece to a ground plate, passing through the patient.
