biomagnification

The result of bioaccumulation and biotransfer by which tissue concentrations of chemicals in organisms at one trophic level exceed tissue concentrations in organisms at the next lower trophic level in a food chain.

biological magnification

the increasing concentration in organisms of a substance such as a pesticide ingested by their predecessors lower down the FOOD CHAIN. Such concentrations may have deleterious effects on the final consumer; for example, the thin-shelled eggs of birds of prey are linked to high levels of pesticides.
