1. origin of life, or of living organisms. 2. the theory that living organisms originate only from other living organisms.
biogenesis [bī′ōjen′əsis] Etymology: Gk, bios + genein, to produce 1 also called biogeny [bī·oj'ənē] , the doctrine that living material can originate only from preexisting life and not from inanimate matter. 2 the origin of life; ontogeny and phylogeny. Compare abiogenesis. biogenetic, adj. biogenesis [bi″o-jen´ĕ-sis] the theory, opposed to spontaneous generation, that living matter always arises by the agency of preexisting living matter.
