When Big Bou announces that the herd is leaving, a snowshoe hare, snowy owl, black bear, bighorn sheep, and clown duck each undertake a quest to become more like the Bou, do what they do, and protect the pass. Aside from a vast swath of wilderness that holds bears, mountain lions and rare bighorn sheep, the losses have been minimal. Each short mask poem--by Snake, Bighorn Sheep, Duck, Mountain Lion, Turtle, Lizard, Butterfly, Bison, Elk, Bear, Deer, Rabbit, and Dog--is accompanied by a photograph of the animal's image in rock, concluding with Man, represented by a handprint. |
