benzoin [ben´zo-in, ben-zo´in]
1. a balsamic resin from Styrax benzoin and other Styrax species, used primarily as a topical skin protectant and antiseptic. It also acts as an expectorant and thus is sometimes used in steam inhalations in treating respiratory disorders. 2. a highly toxic compound prepared from benzaldehyde and cyanide, used in organic synthesis.
