Basenji a small (20-25 lb) red or black, with white, shorthaired dog, with prick ears, a furrowed, wrinkled forehead and a tail that coils over its back. Although known as the 'barkless' dog, it does have a characteristic vocal sound. The breed originated in North Africa as a hunting dog. Called also Congo dog. Some inherited and congenital disorders that occur in the breed are familial nonspherocytic anemia, cystinuria, fanconi's syndrome, giant hypertrophic gastritis and persistent pupillary membrane. She makes weekly rounds with her African basenji dog Fendi as part of the hospital's pet therapy program. The results were compared with DNA from 140 dogs representing 67 breeds around the world--from the African basenji to the Irish wolfhound. There will also be more than 20 English springer spaniels, boxers, bulldogs, Basenjis and Labrador retrievers. |
