barbed wire strong wire with sharp barbs at close intervals, used in fencing to deter livestock. Consists commonly of two strands twisted together and bearing sharp spines every 4 inches (10 cm) or so. Animals accidentally caught in a fence made of the wire can be badly lacerated.
