balanced polymorphism an equilibrium mixture of homozygotes and heterozygotes maintained by natural selection against both homozygotes.

balanced polymorphism

A system of genes in which two alleles are maintained in stable equilibrium because the heterozygote is more fit than either of the homozygotes.
