bagassosis /bag·as·so·sis/ (bag″ah-so´sis) hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to inhalation of dust from bagasse (the residue of cane after extraction of sugar).
bagassosis [bag′əsō′sis] a self-limited lung disease caused by an allergic response to bagasse, the fungi-laden, dusty debris left after the syrup has been extracted from sugarcane. It is characterized by fever, dyspnea, and malaise. bagassosis a hypersensitivity pneumonitis of humans caused by inhalation of thermophilic actinomycetes in moldy bagasse. bagassosis Occupational medicine A hypersensitivity pneumonitis seen in cane sugar workers sensitive to Thermoactinomyces sacchari, T vulgaris, a fungus that grows well in sugar cane pressings.
