1 the variation in metabolic rate in different parts of the body.
2 the development toward the body axis or its parts in relation to the metabolic rate in the various parts.

axial gradient

A gradient of physiological or metabolic activity exhibited by embryos and many adult animals. The principal gradient follows the main axis of the body, being highest at the anterior end and lowest at the posterior end.
