Etymology: ME, awakenen
an anesthetic procedure in which analgesia and anesthesia are accomplished without loss of consciousness. Dental procedures, surgery on a limb or an extremity, scopic examinations, and certain kinds of head surgery are performed using awake anesthesia. With the patient awake or sedated, muscle relaxation is not required. Various combinations of sedatives, tranquilizers, and low concentrations of anesthetic gas may be used. Also called conscious sedation, monitored anesthesia care.
