A disease, such as scurvy, beriberi, or pellagra, caused by deficiency of one or more essential vitamins.

avitaminosis

Etymology: Gk, a, not; L, vita, life, amine, osis, condition
a condition resulting from a deficiency of or lack of absorption or use of one or more dietary vitamins. Also called hypovitaminosis. Compare hypervitaminosis. See also specific vitamins.

avitaminosis [a-vi″tah-mĭ-no´sis]
disease due to deficiency of vitamins in the diet. adj., adj avitaminot´ic.

avitaminosis (āvī´tminō´sis),
n a disease or condition resulting from a deficiency of one or more vitamins in the diet (e.g., scurvy, resulting from ascorbic acid deficiency, and beriberi, resulting from a thiamine deficiency).
avitaminosis, fat-soluble,
n a disease resulting from deficiency of the fat-soluble vitamins (i.e., A, D, E, and K).

avitaminosis
