Patient discussion about aunt

Q. What do we do with her? She is an orphan and has only uncle and aunt who don’t want her. I am living with my roommate for the past 1 year. Something strange and new is happening these days. She wanders off somewhere, leaving me guessing. She won’t tell me where or for what purpose she goes. Someone`s valuables are often found in her bag. I am sure it’s been stolen by her. Her contacts with boys have increased and she is regularly going out with them. When I tried to advise her, she started her activities again but on a discreet note. I don’t know what’s happening. Nowadays she remains depressed and sad. She sleeps a lot. She has stopped going for her classes after she had a fight with our classmate. What do we do with her? She is an orphan and has only uncle and aunt who don’t want her.

A. she is a student? if so- any college or university has a psychologist standing by and ready to help in those kind of cases. if not- be a good friend. talk to her, try to show her that her life changed very fast in a very extreme way and she may need help. a psychiatrist maybe..

Q. My aunt suffered from digestive disorder a few months back. My aunt suffered from digestive disorder a few months back. First we were told that this symptom reveal that she is suffering from fibromyalgia. Later another doctor diagnosed her and said that she is not affected by fibromyalgia. So we like to know actually what is fibromyalgia sometimes mistaken for?

A. I have received similar questions from many of my friends so you are not the first person to have such question, so don’t worry. Usually fibromyalgia is initially mistaken for several other conditions, including Lyme disease, lupus, depression and rheumatoid arthritis to name just a few illnesses. Other conditions for which fibromyalgia is occasionally mistaken include digestive disorders, sleep disorders and thyroid problems. Often, it is because the various symptoms of fibromyalgia are so similar to the symptoms of other disorders that many FMS patients do not receive a proper diagnosis for many years. And this is also why it is especially critical to be seen by either a rheumatologist or a pain specialist to ensure a proper diagnosis, and to rule out other conditions.

Q. when my aunt went through chemo (for colon cancer) her palms became VERY sensitive and had a burning feeling is there any way to prevent this from happening to my mom who is starting her chemo now? If not, what it the best treatment for it?

A. What you describe sounds like peripheral neuropathy, a well known side effect of platinum chemotherapy which is used for colon cancer. Several measures, including giving infusion of calcium and magnesium, and glutathione were found to reduce the rate of this complication, although further studies are necessary.

However, the information is only general advice, since I haven't examined your mother so if you have any questions about this subject, it may be wise to consult a doctor (e.g. oncologist).
