Etymology: L, attenuare, to make thin
pertaining to the dilution of a solution or the reduction in virulence or toxicity of a microorganism or a drug by weakening it.
1. Reduced in virulence or infectivity.
2. Thin, minimal, markedly reduced or decreased.
attenuatedWeakened or reduced, and so altered in characteristics so as no longer to be dangerous. The term is applied to organisms that have been specially cultured so as to reduce their virulence and make them suitable for use in vaccines.
Alive but weakened; an attenuated microorganism can no longer produce disease.
