arrhythmia /ar·rhyth·mia/ (ah-rith´me-ah) variation from the normal rhythm of the heartbeat, encompassing abnormalities of rate, regularity, site of impulse origin, and sequence of activation.arrhyth´mic nonphasic arrhythmia a form of sinus arrhythmia in which the irregularity is not linked to the phases of respiration. sinus arrhythmia the physiologic cyclic variation in heart rate related to vagal impulses to the sinoatrial node; it is common, particularly in children, and is not abnormal.
Arrhythmia An abnormal rhythm or irregularity of the heartbeat. The heartbeat may either be too fast (tachycardia) or too slow (bradicardia). Arrhythmias may cause symptoms such as palpitation or light-headedness, but many have more serious consequences, including sudden death. | David Schwartzman, associate professor of medicine and director of the Atrial Arrhythmia Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and principal investigator for the Concerto AT study. In the instance of a cardiac event such as an atrial arrhythmia, the wireless system incorporated in the Cylos DR-T pacemaker will automatically and immediately transmit this record to the physician's office without requiring any patient involvement. The availability of a cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator that can also diagnose and treat an atrial arrhythmia has enormous potential for millions of heart failure patients worldwide because it enables physicians to treat both the upper and lower chambers of the heart. |
