plagiocephaly

[plā′jē·ōsef′əlē]
Etymology: Gk, plagios, askew, kephale, head
a congenital malformation of the skull in which premature or irregular closure of the coronal or lambdoidal sutures results in asymmetric growth of the head, giving it a twisted, lopsided appearance so that the maximum length is not along the midline but on a diagonal. Also called plagiocephalism. See also craniostenosis. plagiocephalic, plagiocephalous, adj.

pla·gi·o·ceph·a·ly

(plā'jē-ō-sef'ă-lē)
An asymmetric craniostenosis due to premature closure of the lambdoid and coronal sutures on one side; characterized by an oblique deformity of the cranium.
Synonym(s): asynclitism of the skull.

plagiocephaly

A skull deformity in which the major dimension is on a diagonal because of premature closure of the SUTURES on one side.

plagiocephaly (plāˈ·jē··seˑ·f·lē),

n a medical condition occurring in infants; distinguished by the reshaped, flattened, or deformed appearance of the skull. It develops as a result of constant pressure being placed on one area of the thin and flexible skull of the infant. Can be corrected if treated early; techniques involving direct cranial molding often provide the best results.

pla·gi·o·ceph·a·ly

(plā'jē-ō-sef'ă-lē)
An asymmetric craniostenosis due to premature closure of the lambdoid and coronal sutures on one side; characterized by an oblique deformity of the cranium.
Synonym(s): asynclitism of the skull.
[G. plagios, oblique, + kephalē, head]

plagiocephaly (plā´jēōsef´əlē),

n a condition characterized by an asymmetrical skull with flat spots. Temporomandibular joint disorder, as well as auditory and visual disturbances, may result if left untreated. If diagnosed during infancy, the condition can be treated with cranial orthotics.
