ascending reticular activating system (ARAS) (·senˑ·ding r·tiˑ·ky·ler akˑ·t·vāˈ·ting sisˑ·tm),
n system that transmits messages to the limbic system and hypothalamus, triggers release of hormones and neurotransmitters, and facilitates functions such as learning, memory, and wakefulness.
