ankylosing spondylitis; AS autoimmune disease of young men of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) B27 tissue type, characterized by high titres of tumour necrosis factor, progressive spondyloarthropathy, inflammatory back pain, limited spinal mobility, limited chest expansion and sacroiliitis; typically presenting with bursitis, buttock and heel pain, marked early-stage systemic fatigue, late-stage increased spinal curvature and spinal ankylosis ('bamboo' spine); foot problems (e.g. pain, plantar and posterior heel spur formation, soft-tissue swelling and bursitis) occur in the earlier stages; late-stage foot symptoms include joint erosions, periosteal proliferation and anklyosis due to joint margin exostoses (Table 1)
