n an induced state in which subjects exhibit behavior similar to that displayed by sleepwalkers. A precursor to the Freudian psychotherapeutic techniques of catharsis and free association; evolved from the practice of animal magnetism, so named in the early 19th century by the Marquis de Puysegur.
