median atlantoaxial joint

one of three points of articulation of the atlas and the axis. The median atlantoaxial joint is a pivot articulation among the dens, the axis, and the ring of the atlas and involves five ligaments. It allows rotation of the axis and the skull, the extent of rotation limited by the alar ligaments.
