ar·thri·tis mu·'ti·lans

a form of chronic rheumatoid arthritis in which osteolysis occurs with extensive destruction of the joint cartilages and bony surfaces with pronounced deformities, chiefly of the hands and feet; similar changes occur in some cases of psoriatic arthritis.

mutilating arthritis

A generic term for end-stage joint destruction accompanied by osteolysis, which is typical of advanced psoriatic arthritis but may also occur in rheumatoid arthritis and in mixed connective tissue disease.

arthritis mutilans

Severe deformities especially of the hands and wrists, resulting from long-term untreated or inadequately treated rheumatoid arthritis. There is extensive reabsorption of bones with collapse of soft tissue resulting in gross mutilation.
